Building our sukkah – September 28, 2012

Sukkot is here.  A time to reflect on the portable dwellings of our ancestors.  Our children discussed what makes a house, how are they different and similar and who lives in houses.  Everyone had an opportunity to help build our class sukkah.

Rosh Hashana is here!

L’Shana Tovah to everyone.  Wishing you all a garden of goodness this New Year!

May it be filled with….

Dates: Tamarim - A Wish for Peace

May it be Your will, God, that all fighting will end. May we date this New Year with Peace and Happiness.

Pomegranate: Rimon – A Wish for Mitzvot

May it be Your will, God, that in this New Year we keep your commandments. May our blessings be as many as the seeds of the pomegranate.

Apple and Honey: Tapuah Bi-d’vash – A Wish for Sweetness

May it be Your will, G-d, to renew for us a year that is as good and sweet as honey, from the beginning all the way to the end.

Green Beans: Rubia or Lubia - A Wish for Prosperity

May it be Your will, G-d, that we increase our merits.

Pumpkin: K’ra – A Wish for Happiness

May it be Your will, God , to guard us. Tear away all evil decrees against us and proclaim the good things we have done in the past and will do in the New Year.

Beets: Selek – A Wish for Freedom

May it be Your will, God, that all the enemies who might beat us will beat a retreat, and we will beat a path to freedom.

Leeks, Scallions and Onions: Karti – A Wish for Friendship

May it be Your will, God that our enemies be cut off. Without enemies we hope for the blessing of friendship. May it be Your will, God, that mazel (good fortune) find us in the year to come.

Head of a Lettuce - A Wish for Leadership

May it be Your will, God, that we be heads, not tails. May we be leaders, not followers, never stragglers but at the head of what is right and what is good in the year to come.
